Netherlands -based designer Judith van den Boom strives to
bring human relationships to fruition within the
processes of manufacturing her own ceramic designs.
Working part-time in China since 2006, her design work challenges contemporary notions of making in today's climate of super-fast production and consumption. She works to proactively slow the product development cycle by seeking out and exploring “warm
relationships” with manufacturers, where factory employees collaborate in the realization of design work. Her recent creative investigations of material, body language and sensation fed directly into a
partnership with a large manufacturer in Tangshan,
China that included design workshops, cooking and poetry reading with factory workers.
Boom is a partner with Gunter Wehmeyer in Studio BoomWehmeyer, an international studio that embraces "a deeper people approach attitude" for creating new forms of multidisciplinary communication and collaborative cultural exchange in the Netherland, Germany and China.
